Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) official Mouayyad Shaaban warned on Thursday that Israel’s plan to annex the occupied West Bank and Ma’ale Adumim amounts to “a declaration of war” on Palestinians and international law.
Speaking to Anadolu, Shaaban said “no Israeli decision or act can erase the Palestinian identity of the land,” urging global isolation of Israel’s government and settlers in response.
The Israeli Knesset this week approved two bills in a first reading to impose sovereignty over the occupied West Bank and the Ma’ale Adumim settlement east of Jerusalem. Both measures need three more readings to become law.
Shaaban said the move would destroy any remaining path to a two-state solution and called for a unified Palestinian response on the ground.
He recalled that Israel’s annexation of East Jerusalem in 1967 failed to erase its Palestinian character, insisting that “this land is ours.”
The International Court of Justice ruled in July that Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territory is illegal and that all settlements must be dismantled.
